Hundreds of supporters, relatives, and friends joined the Nograles family on Sunday in paying last respects to the first Mindanaoan House Speaker and former Davao City first district congressman Prospero “Boy” Nograles.

Supporters clad in blue t-shirts filled the St. Jude Parish in Davao to attend a Mass, which was followed by a funeral procession to Forest Lake – San Pedro Memorial Park.

Among those who attend the interment was former Davao City mayor Ben De Guzman, who was Nograles’ running mate during the 2010 mayoral race. He said they remained friends after ending their political journey.

“From there, we kept on communicating with each other, but I was not talking about politics anymore, neither was he talking about politics. We just continued to be friends until the time of his death,” he said.

Nograles served five terms as representative in the first district of Davao City, and became House Speaker from 2008 to 2010 under the Arroyo administration.

His second child, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, said he was not just a loving father, but also loved serving his constituents.

“Papa gave out his heart 5 times, as I look back to those moments, I realized what they really meant. The first congressman to pour that much development to boulevard and other barangays, earth fillings, cementing, lighting up the dark corners, feeding, medical, scholarships, he paved the way for others to follow,” he said.

His wife, Rhodora Nograles, also said that despite being busy as a public servant, Prospero had always been there for the family.

“Boy has always been democratic in all family decisions. For him, the voices of all members of the family need and deserved to be heard, but as the head of the family, he always had the last say. He was loved and most respected by our family that we always abide by his decisions,” she said.

Rhodora said his late husband’s legacy will continue as two of their sons, Karlo and PBA party-list representative Jericho, are both in public office.
